The Dø @ the Bell House, Brooklyn, 9/8/10

Posted on 10 September 2010

Despite topping the French music charts in 2008 with their debut record, A Mouthful (becoming the first group to do so with an English language record), the French/Finnish duo the Dø (pronounced “doe,” as in as in do-re-mi) had a hard time finding a label in the States. Still, the group can draw a crowd, so a night after kicking off their North American tour at Manhattan’s Mercury Lounge, the duo- singer Olivia Merilahti and multi-instrumentalist Dan Levy- with band in tow, made their first trip to Brooklyn to play the spacious Bell House. After a rousing opening set by Brooklyn trio Dinosaur Feathers, the Dø played an hour-long set, drawing largely from A Mouthful, as well as songs from the upcoming record. Merilahti has a small, high-pitched voice that’s also strangely forceful. At times, her voice has a plaintive quality that adds just the right touch of melancholy to songs that might seem too bubbly, while at other times it keeps the slower tunes from turning into depressing dirges.

While the Dø’s sound is most easily described as pop, they dabble in a lot of different genres, jumping from experimental jazz to Middle Eastern-tinged tunes to dance to rock, with Merilahti’s voice the only unifying sound.  But despite their aural experimentation, they really hit their stride on the straight-forward pop tune “At Last,”  with Merilahti’s crooning about a new love over a sparse guitar and walking bass line. There’s nothing particularly inventive or original about the song, but the Dø try on so many different stylistic hats that sometimes the most ordinary songs stand out the most.
