DJ lil Alex’s Top 5 House Tracks – Aug 12th

Posted on 11 August 2009

Every week, resident writer DJ lil Alex gives TheMST readers the hottest five house tracks to watch out for.

01
Sky And Sand (original mix)
Paul & Fritz Kalkbrenner

Sometimes you come across a tune which is indescribable. (“What a great way to start a music review” I hear you say…) ‘Sky & Sand’ touches my soul, and I think it might just touch yours too. There’s no big drops, no big breakdowns and not much of a beat. However, what this tune does have is a hugely emotional vocal. It’s neither house nor pop, but cross ‘Moby’ with ‘The Streets’ and you might be able to imagine where this tune lands. Expect some big remixes soon, as I have no doubt this vocal will be heavily abused by producers across the globe.

02
Kidsos (original mix)
Sebastian Ingrosso

This song SCREAMS summer! The sample is beautiful and sunny and euphoric, and leads into a tough and vaguely tribal groove. Yes, Ingrosso has got all the bases covered here, and I’m certain you’ll bump into this tune at some point during the rest of your sumer!

(I can’t quite place this sample! It’s been used on an advert recently, maybe for a mobile phone company? If you figure it out then please put me out of my misery!)

03
Flauta Magica (original mix)
Funkagenda & Mark Knight

To understand this tune (it may sound a little minimal) you need to play it loud and preferably sit in-front of your sub-woofer. Forget the catchy whistle and the mesmerizing chant, the sub-bass on this track will blow your hat off, quite literally if you follow the instructions above! There’s a definite Latin American influence here, so close your eyes and cha cha!

04
Thriller (david jones mix)
Michael Jackson, David Jones, Aqua Diva

Eurggh, how much longer will they drag out the Michael Jackson thing??? As long as possible please with tunes like this still appearing! At last we’ve been given a mature and REAL tribute to the King of Pop. I must confess to have never having heard any of David Jones’ previous releases, but he’s certainly going to make headway with this track. With just enough of the original to make it commercial, but enough of a beat and kick to make it viable for even the most serious clubber.

05
You And I (original mix)
Medina

I thought you might appreciate a brief move away from the tribal and groove orientated tracks. ‘You And I’ is currently receiving great support internationally from a lot of big names including Tiesto and Deadmau5, and with good reason. The beat is current, the vocals take you back to trance (let’s be honest, we’ve all fallen for trance at some point in our lives) and the big synths and rolling bass line keep this track truly euphoric.

Thanks for that! Remember the release now, there are so many samples used at the moment, it’s hard to place them sometimes.
