I have only been in New York for a few months so I am still walking around with stars in my eyes, in that honeymoon phase where everything is amazing, the view of the brick wall from my office window is amazing, the crowded PATH journey across the Hudson is amazing and even walking down 5th Avenue and seeing a man do….in fact I will stop there! So when I come back from a Saturday night and tell people how unbelievable this night out was they take it with a New York pinch of salt, but the Danger party in Brooklyn truly blew me away.
From the moment I walked in I felt the energy that was flowing through this party and part way through the night I stopped and looked around and realised that I actually never wanted this party to end, I didn’t want to go home. I stayed until the bitter end, until daylight flooded in through the large square windows, until the once cramped dance floor became a wide open space and all that remained were a few lost souls scattered among the debris, that thick party residue left behind from the mischief and mayhem that erupted just a few hours earlier.

Brooklyn is probably one of my favourite areas of my limited experience in New York, I find the people there fascinating and this party was no different. There was every kind of character imaginable. The warehouse was set up with various tents and tepee style dens, the whole decor and ambiance was very artistic and everyone there was chilled out and up for having a good time. There was an ‘anything goes’ kind of vibe and the infectious energy flowed from person to person. It was very risqué and lacked inhibitions, I got a very Andy Warhol / Party Kids vibe – it all seemed wrong and yet right at the same time.
The music started off with dub-step and an overcrowded hot and sweaty dance floor (which is just how it should be), there was also a full brass band playing, they were all so charismatic and were each decorated with green glitter. As the night progressed the beat slowed down and we were left with some very dirty minimal techno. It was grungy and filthy and all a bit surreal. One of the tepee areas had a floor covered in cocoa beans with a throne built up on a stack of chairs, another den area had a swing, there were washing lines complete with hanging clothes and fairy lights everywhere and dancers flinging themselves around a climbing web – and all the while the DJ is spinning dark and dirty techno music while a crowd of people dance and drink $3 beers. Downstairs they were serving frozen vodka drinks that were made in a blender powered by a man pedaling a bike while somebody else sat in a corner with an easel and some paint. I even got invited to an orgy.
This party overpowered you with stimulus that appealed to all senses, you could walk around a corner and get hit with something completely unexpected but at the same time you wouldn’t be surprised. This party for me epitomised New York City – anything is possible, it’s a place where all you want to do is keep on dancing and never go home.
