Check out the pictures as they tell the story of the night better than any words – Santos Party House is by far my favourite venue in New York. Then as a great treat for those hardcore dance music lovers, the after-hours rave Resolute followed directly after – check out those pictures here.

Directly after Santos Party House, a large number of the crowd headed over to Resolute 035 on the west side of Manhattan. After arriving at 5.30am, I enjoyed the sounds of Alejandro Mosso aka Funzion as he brought us right through to the sunlight hours.

Then came a pleasent surprise for those that did not hear the announcement at Santos Party House as Lee Burridge came on to close out the party. I stayed until 10am bouncing to Burridge’s sound that blended perfectly with the Resolute series; funky, bouncing beats that give you the energy to keep you dancing until collapse.

When the Santos Party House website claimed Dance.here.Too is to bring dance music to the city with ‘no nonsense, no door drama, no fuss’, I got excited. I had long craved a break from being treated like cattle by door staff, only to realise that once inside you are in fact packed like cattle. Well, you won’t get that at Santos. You stroll straight through the doors into a great open space, where the crush of other dance clubs is completely avoided. This meant that even before Behrouz came on last Saturday, the crowd were bouncing to warm-up DJ Jason Bowen. I think I even spottted a few strangers hugging – standard fair after 3, but before 1am is quite the achievement.

However, the switch to Behrouz was clear. A heavy pumping 4 x 4 beat rippled out into the crowd (showing off the immense sound system). At this point I ventured up to the stage to take some shots. Now don’t call me naive (although I am), I had expected a somewhat hairy Middle Eastern prince – see the promo shot here. So when I saw the clean shaven DJ, I thought ‘wow who is this guy? He is amazing!’. However, it was in fact Behrouz – albeit different to the promo image. Hilarious. Finally someone is taking a jab at those seductive DJ poses you see with all the promos (ha!!).

So that is Behrouz, light-hearted but extremely talented. His sound was varied like many DJ’s we see these days, driving from 4×4 to progressive, from hard to softer and back again. Everyone was extremely impressed with his set, and the crowd did not stop raving right through to 4.30. Check out the nightclubcity forums to hear from a few satisfied clubbers. So tonight make sure you head out to see Danny Howells and Lee Burridge, I know I will be there, and so will many faces from last week. Dance.Here.Too is slowly stealing our saturday night’s – who needs venue variety when Santos Party House does it so well and top DJ talent is being booked in the pairs? SANTOS PARTY TIME!!

As Paul van Dyk’s New Year’s Eve affair was winding down at the Roseland (before his charter flight to Montréal), Lee Burridge was just getting Dance.Here.Too’s NYE festivities bumpin’ at Santo’s Party House. The DJ star relied on both CDJs and vinyl for his pulsating set that shook downtown ‘til the morning light. He gave not only what the crowd wanted, but what we needed, and thus, garnered an awesome reaction.

Well folks, Burridge is back at DHT, this Saturday March 6, 2010. Also jetting into Gotham to join him, (following a gig at Chicago ’s Sound Bar) is Brit favorite, Danny Howells. It’s destined to be a night you won’t want to miss. Both artists spin up original and remixed beats that bridge nearly every desirable type of electronic dance music.

A Dorset, UK native, Burridge is known for his tremendous efforts on Balance: 012, collaborations under Global Underground, and forming Tyrant Sound System with DJs Sasha and Craig Richards in late 1998. He established himself as one of Hong Kong’s most prolific DJ/producers, catapulting into the limelight with sets at Cream, Ministry of Sound, Gatecrasher, Love Parade, Burning Man, and of course Miami’s WMC. Burridge has been in DJ Magazine’s Top 100 steadily since 1999. His annual, Made Event-hosted Halloween bash has firmly put him at the forefront of DJs in NYC. Expect plenty of acid house, minimal techno, and dance-fueled break beat. Let’s hope for some decent La Roux and Chromeo remixes thrown in for good measure!

Howells, who hit up DHT in mid December, will be sure to deliver a more progressive electronic sound and hopefully explore into deep trance and tribal grooves, which he is notorious for. Also a Global Underground, Ministry and Cream–artist, the Englishman has held key posts at Twilo, NYC and Heaven, London . His Global Underground 027: Miami torched the Billboard Top Electronic Albums, peaking at #14. Our predictions are for an old New York City vibe with his set. One thing is for sure, Howells will be sporting his latest vintage tee or hipster wares from the booth. See you there!

San Francisco-based producer and DJ, Behrouz, takes another swing at bat this weekend at Santo’s Party House’s Dance.Here.Too. Saturday 27th February.

This time, Behrouz’s set will mark his newly announced residency at Dance.Here.Too. series. Behrouz’s most recent residencies include Denver’s Release and Church nightclubs, and a bi-monthly residency at Turnmills in London.

After celebrated, long running residencies at San Francisco’s Release Club 1015 and before that, DV8, Behrouz will bring to New York the mythically organic and sundry beats that have garnered him thousands of fans around the world. Behrouz has collaborated alongside dance music’s best such as Deep Dish (who worked to get Behrouz his residency at 1015), John Digweed, Carl Cox and Pete Tong. He has DJ-ed events at mega-clubs and smaller venues in dance capitals like Ibiza, Los Angeles, Miami (he’ll make several appearances at this year’s WMC) Buenos Aires, Dubai and Tokyo.

Behrouz’s motto, “it’s all about music” adds up in regards to his lengthy discography; His 2002 hit, “Safe from Harm,” “Feel So Good” (which was included on Deep Dish’s Global Underground 025 Toronto,) and the more recent, “Azab” (featured on Carl Cox’s fresh compilation Fact-Australia) are only minor testaments to his hard work ethic and high creative output. Behrouz’s “Rich in Paradise” featuring The FPI Project was also a hit in 2008. He is freshly off a global tour for Yoshitoshi’s popular In House We Trust CD series.

Behrouz was nominated for Best Breakthrough DJ at the 2004 Dancestar Awards (held yearly at Miami’s Winter Music Conference,) received a nomination for Best Breakthrough DJ at the 2004 DJ Awards in Ibiza, and was nominated Best Resident DJ at the 2005 Club World Awards for his popular Pure Behrouz residency at Ruby Skye (San Francisco).

Behrouz is currently in the studio finishing Pure Behrouz San Francisco coming out summer 2010 under Nervous Records.

Among the highlights was a cameo by comedian/Brooklynite-about-town Eugene Mirman. Coming out before the Mates’ encore, Mirman was greeted with the usual mix of cheers from fans and who-the-heck-is-this heckling from others. After threatening to play an array of Jethro Tull songs on Gardner’s keyboard, Mirman remained on stage for the duration of the encore, and “played” the drums on a cover of Tom Waits’ “Took the Long Road Home.”  As is usual with Mirman in such appearances, he trod the fine line between entertaining and ruinous intrusion.

Mates of State, however, sounded great. Their harmonies were working, they had the crowd dancing, and they didn’t appear to have lost any vitality after a decade-long career that’s seen five records, one wedding, and two kids. Mates of State seem to function well as a band and a couple, and in a tongue-in-cheek nod to their seemingly blissful union, they ended a particularly sweet, everything-is-magical-and-wonderful duet with a simple, harmonized coda of “Unicorns!”

Nokia Theatre Times Square Dance Music Series Big Hit

To kick off their new electronic dance music series at the Nokia Theatre Times Square with a big bang, Made Event and Armani Exchange went to the best— Dutch trance god Ferry Corsten. But before we could meet the man, Swedish electro house talent, John Dahlbäck, revved up the crowd with an awesome warp-up set making sure the energy was high and happy before Corsten took the stage.

The event was a huge success, with admirable attendance and two stellar sets. Even more noticeable, was how well the venue worked. The Nokia Theatre, well accustomed to hosting high profile concerts and events, was considerably cleaner,  more organized and open than most clubbing series venues. There are several expansive bars, lounges, bathrooms (without arduous waits,) and the performance space itself has room to take a break in the auditorium seating at the back or dance among the masses with space to actually move. The vast majority elected for the latter, pulsating with hands held high under the lasers and LEDs in the large dancing area, the orchestra pit zone.

The only downside of the evening, was that there could have been more moving lights, lasers, special effects and hazers. But the rig that did exist worked well enough.

Ferry Corsten, a regular in DJ Magazine’s Top 10 for years, proved he still has the power to deliver the magic (above-expectations) at live sets. From Sensation White Antwerpen to the urban hot-spots of New York, Corsten makes sure to play the crowd the tracks that made him a Trance household name. We got hints and remixes of such iconic beats as “Made of Love,” Whispers,” “Everything Goes,” “Fire,” “Zen” “Gouryella,” “Out of the Blue,” and “We Belong.”

Speaking of which—that 2001 stunner, System F album Out of the Blue will be re-released and digitally re-mastered (with rare remixes) later this spring.  Additionally Corsten’s upcoming release, “Out of the Blue 2010,” is composed of remixes of the title anthem by power players such as Tiësto, Laidback Luke, and Giuseppe Ottaviani. Also later this year, Corsten will release the compilation Once Upon A Night. So expect more greatness from this master.

We have no clue when Corsten will bless us again with sweet music in New York City, but those who need more fresh beats soon, should tune into his broadcast, Corsten’s Countdown, on Sirius XM Radio, weekly on Wednesdays at 9pm ET.

Those who missed out, or plan on hitting up the next date in the series, should mark their calendars for a big weekend in March; March 19 will see ATB back in the city after an awesome set at Electric Zoo, and the following day (March 20), Eric Prydz and Sébastien Léger will shake the Nokia Theatre Times Square. Definitely two nights not to be missed—TheMST.com surely won’t.

All tomorrows Parties – a concept thought up by a British man with nothing but an idea and a want for good music. Chris Horgan decided that he was going to put on a festival, that included only bands that he himself liked – purely selfish, but incredibly genius. Who would have thought that ten years later, this idea would be reaching international stages and only getting bigger and better.

A Look Back at Last Year – ATP 2009

ATP New York, now in its second year, took place in Monticello New York, in the idyllic yet yesteryear like setting of the Catskills. Staged in a holiday resort that fifty years ago would have been buzzing with? families, is now slightly reminiscent of something out of a David Lynch film, crossed with The Shining. Somehow though, this managed to work.

The most glorious and ingenious part of this festival, is that you don’t have to camp. There are beds, showers, and coffee for all. Why did no one think of this before? The resort came fully equipped with a swimming pool, tennis courts, a boating lake, a cinema with ATP decided films, and (my personal favourite) the Steve Albini curated games room. ATP’s original ethics remain even a decade later, with no corporate branding or sponsorship, no special areas, and definitely no VIP’s. In the three days I was there I walked past Nick Drake in the corridor, watched Animal Collective playing regular festival goers at table tennis, saw Wanye Coyne from the Flaming lips sauntering in a 70’s three piece suit (trying to blend in, but not quite succeeding – any wonder?); witnessed Steve Albini ordering from the fast food stand and also playing the pub quiz, and then Samuel Beam from Iron and Wine gave me his seat at the bar. What a gentleman. As opposed to major festivals, where this could possible mean mass crowding around said band members and a wrath of demented fans demanding signatures; there is an air of mutual respect from fans and musicians, who maintain this ATP etiquette.

Anyway, back to the music. Last year we had the My Bloody Valentine curated, heavily post rock flavored festival, while this year we have The Flaming Lips choosing their psychedelic idols. Here are some of my highlights.

Dirty three performed “Don’t look back”, playing the entirety of their album Ocean Songs. With good friend Nick Cave joining them on piano, their set was a visceral display of fast paced enigmatic post-rock, with front man Warren Ellis proving quite the comedian with lines such as “we’re not responsible for emo!”

A rare performance from Panda Bear demonstrated that Noah can quite easily cut it as a solo artist, standing alone with nothing but a backdrop of intense visuals and electronics alongside him. He performed his own take on a few Animal Collective songs, and successfully held the attention of the entire crowd on the main stage by himself. Quite unexpected from a character who shuns the mainstream limelight so actively.

The Boredoms performing Boardum nine. Nine drummers on stage, doing nothing but beating the hell out of their drum kits until the roadies had to dismantle them in order to get them off stage. Can you even imagine what nine drum kits in one room sounds like This was definitely one of the most incredible performances I have ever been witness to.

Bradford Cox performing solo on the second stage, with nothing but a guitar and occasionally harmonica. Not only did he prove to be a man with songwriting talents beyond his years and a voice with Thom York like similarities, but he’s also an amateur comedian who provided one of the most hilarious sets of the festival. And he wore a visually intoxicating polka dot shirt that most grown men would be too scared to walk down the street in. Bradford later on established himself as an ATP fan favourite by hosting a late night sing-along to classics such as “Somewhere over the rainbow” and “Girls just wanna have fun.”

Words cannot begin to describe what incredible hosts ATP are. They continue to exceed their previous festivals year after year, with locations, artists and sumptuous extracurricular activities that music fans can only dream of. Quite simply, you’re spoilt beyond recognition by a veritable musical feast and you quite possibly will never want to go to a festival that is not run by ATP ever again. Seriously.

Christian Pielow: Starting out on the Rebel Rave tour, who are you most excited to play with?

Seth Troxler: With this tour I’m really excited to play with everyone, it’s so nice to have the whole family together, but if I could choose one person, I would say Deniz Kurtel it’s her first real tour and I want to see how she’s going to play. Can’t wait.

What country / venue are you most excited to play?

I’m doing two tours right now, partially with the rebel rave tour and partially with my own stops for the Boogy Bytes. As far as places I’m most excited to go, I would say Brazil. It’s going to be during carnival, and I’ve never been.

I’m going to be seeing you in NY, what have been your best experiences of playing here?

So many good times in NYC, I loved all the events I did with Save the Cannibals. But I would say the afters in NYC are always my best experiences. Or the first Blood and Thunder. What a night.

Have you had much time to vibe with Deniz Kurtel, the exciting new signing to Wolf + Lamb? What does she bring to the label?

Deniz is an amazing person and artist. She is so smart and adds a new real edge to the whole Crosstown tour. Her music is deep and sexy, and I feel she’s got a bright future in dance music.

How does 2010 look for your own releases, I feel a buzz this year, you feel it?

Well I have some tricks up my sleeve, but I think the first bomb to drop is a new single I did with Deetron called “Each step” HEAT!!

Do you plan to return to Berlin after the tour? Will you ever return to the US?

I’m never really in Berlin, but I’ll be in Europe after Miami. Summer is a crazy time for me. Home becomes a distant memory.

If you were to do a State of the Union address like Obama recently did, what would you say?

Change has come. (But I don’t think Obama was able to say that just yet)

Big final Question man. How do you find the dance crowds in Berlin / Europe compared to the US? I am from London and find the UK crowds more mixed, but feel the dance revival is truly coming to the US and multicultural crowds will come forward, what do you think?

I think you hit the nail on the head, in regards to the multicultural crowd, as well as the fact that the people in the US are really looking for a good event rather than them just being part of everyday night life make for a huge difference in vibe between the US and Berlin or Europe. However I do think that the UK has the most up for it crowd at the moment and it’s my favourite place to play. London town is where I love to get down.
