INFO: German club veteran Timo Maas is a master of reinvention. Emerging during the excess of trance’s heyday in the late ‘90s with his self-labelled “Wet & Hard” style that fused techno, progressive house and funk in a rivetingly futuristic manner, he quickly became the remixer du jour for both the club underground and the commercial big leagues. Paul Oakenfold signed up his debut album Loud for his Perfecto imprint – a modern classic that effortlessly bridged accessibility and raw dancefloor sleaze from electro to breaks to tech and hip-hop – with his second album Pictures sharing a label with the likes of Muse and Garbage. And let’s not forget that “Dooms Night” remix of Azzido Da Bass which went on to inspire a generation of LFO-loving dubstep and bass producers. After a hiatus of a couple of years, he cast aside his chart-breaking fame and re-embraced his old love of techno, teaming up with Italy’s Santos in the studio and becoming a stalwart of Sven Väth’s scene-leading Cocoon Recordings, smashing everyone’s preconceptions of his work wide open. This period of resurrection saw the duo team under the banner of Mutant Clan, again breaking down musical barriers and giving the world their warped version of techno.

He’s a musician who will succeed at whatever he puts his hand to, and his next move is always highly anticipated. Behind the decks, he packs one of the hardest punches around, pulling you inside his hypnotic world and creating sets that live, breath and thump as one cohesive, gargantuan entity. So dedicated is he to his craft that he’s built a club on his own land – a Funktion One-packed barn next to his farmhouse in Germany where he rigorously tests out his newest productions and finds. Only a DJ and producer as innovative, technically brilliant and downright loveable could be worthy of an undertaking as prestigious and lauded as the mixing of a Balance compilation. This is Maas’ first official compilation in 9 years.

“The format of the Balance mix series was always quite appealing to me; to spread myself out over 2 CDs without essentially having to “rock” a crowd from the beginning is a very good thing. I was able to also include deeper, downbeat, “earlier set” material, that I personally like to listen to, but am not essentially playing out on a normal club night.

For me “the trip” is quite important to create, with a mix of brand new, even exclusive material, but also tracks that rock my world at the moment and most essentially have rocked my world for many years, the so -called “classics”.”
– Timo Maas

Maas draws us into his musical world with two sumptuous cuts of ambient electronica from his studio, before boldly grabbing our attention with Nicolas Jaar’s already-classic, woozy early morning anthem “Time For Us”. Disc 1 is all about displaying his melodic, charismatic, emotive side – the turgid electro pop of Vector Lovers, the lush disco licks of Toby Tobias and the tripped-out eccentricity of DJ Koze keeping you hooked, the tempo and rhythmic clout slowly building towards the middle of the mix. Jazzy pianos are drawn in, Maas reminding us that this electronic lark is not the be all and end all of music as the opposing tech house backbone becomes more prominent. Mathias Schaffhäuser’s “The 1st Thing” signals that Timo’s tech vein is starting to throb, with animal noises permeating the sexy wiggle of the track. A slice of classic Tenaglia ups the ante, and it looks like we’re set for a thumping finale – before the majestic, blissed-out melody of Carl Craig’s “At Les” pulses in, setting us up for a classy and experimental closer which sees Maas and Santos collide with Elgar and William Orbit.

“The basic rules off DJing haven`t really changed for me. Of course the technical possibilities have, but in the end, it`s all about the selection of music you play – not about the technical skills you`re having when you`re on stage.” – TM

The second act on CD2 makes no attempt to disguise its intent, laden with thudding kicks, plenty of rolling percussion and the intricate attention to detail that peppers his sets and productions. It’s largely comprised of works from him and his colleagues from his quirky new label Rockets & Ponies, with numerous exclusives across both discs in fact. Elements that don’t always reveal themselves at first listen are stacked all around this mix – intricate layers, trickery in the stereo field, unearthly effects and chiefly, hefty groove throughout. At first tracks come thick and fast– more sexy Maas magic, into some wonderfully deep Kenny Larkin, before the mix begins to unwind and take its time about things. Things start taking a turn for the weird, clearly revealing Timo’s love for “tripping the ass out of people” – his remix of We Fell To Earth’s “Lights Out” showing tinges of the ‘70s psych rock that he and Santos while away hours in the studio to, and eerie sci-fi sounds crawling all over the place. Eventually the psychedelic feel subsides, giving way to the blissful melody of Alex Dolby’s re-rub of the Rockets & Ponies anthem “Chinese Massage”, and the mix then dips down once again into deeper territory before unleashing a torrent of acid filth. Timo’s Lost Veteranos project appears with the gnarly, industrial intensity of “It’s Wronger”, before a classic 303 double-header from Emmanuel Top and Hardfloor bangs you into submission, taking you back to a wonderfully simpler but no less impactful time. A sprinkling of magic dust rounds off this heady compilation in the form of his own epic, unreleased version of Placebo’s typically yearning “Ashtray Heart” – a fittingly powerful finale.

“It was quite an intense process spread out over 4 month to listen, re-listen, collect and choose the music for my Balance CDs. I don`t know how many tracks I was listening to with my “compilation ears” – maybe a few thousand – and thanks to my amazing production partner Santos, I was even able to fill spaces on the mix with the right tracks that we wrote in the production process just for Balance. Nearly everything exclusive was road-tested over the month before I mixed it too. I`m very happy with the result.” – TM

Following on from the success of the critically acclaimed EP This Desert, Booklyn’s The Hundred in the Hands will release their debut full-length album on September 21st on Warp Records. Time Out New York says “The Hundred in the Hands’ music springs from that sliver of the early ‘80s in which pop was personal, arty and potentially angry,”

The Hundred in the Hands LP is an album of deceptively complex pop songs which hark back to the dance music of NYC’s storied underground. Where their recent This Desert EP feels like a summertime pop dream, THITH’s forthcoming album conjures the spirit of downtown’s mutant disco scene as made legendary by clubs like the Paradise Garage. It’s a product of DIY home-recording plus a series of studio sessions in London and New York with contributions by producer friends including Jacques Renault, Richard X, Eric Broucek and Chris Zane.

The Hundred in the Hands is Eleanore Everdell and Jason Friedman. The two live in Brooklyn and discovered their shared sensibility for early hip hop, French house and disco, ska and dub, post-punk, British invasion-mod and girl pop from the 60’s through the 80’s and decided to form a band. Their first song—the post-punk rave-up “Dressed in Dresden”—was written and recorded in a couple of days, released online, picked up and released as a 45 by a record shop in the U.K. where they were soon playing shows and coming to the attention of Warp Records. Meanwhile, the two retreated to the bunker to write and record. During that time, Friedman and Everdell focused on deciding exactly who they wanted to be. What they discovered and emerged with were 11 startling new tracks and a precise and deliberate sound.

The Hundred in the Hands are now touring the US supporting Temper Trap, Delphic and Bear in Heaven and will also be playing live in Brooklyn on September 24th. For more information and for tour dates visit their MySpace or Facebook page. The LP The Hundred in the Hands is available to buy from September 21st 2010.

A new beacon for New York nightlife will be ignited this fall in the heart of Manhattan – DISTRICT 36. The brand new, custom-built nightclub injects originality and vitality into the scene and will once again put forth New York City at the center of global clubbing.

District 36 will revive the tradition of classic New York dance clubs built for dance music enthusiasts by building on the pillars of the proper NY club: impeccable sound, exceptional music programming, superior hospitality and a dancefloor that gives you the intimacy of a small room but the power of a mega club. The three-level nightclub will feature an impeccable sound designed and engineered by Gary Stewart Audio – legendary for designing sound systems at some of the most renowned clubs around the world. In addition, the club has assembled a team of nightlife professionals who bring vast amounts of experience and expertise in building a successful nightclub.

District 36’s Musical Director Taimur Agha will be programming nights with the same philosophy behind his much-respected BlkMarket Membership parties: booking artists who have inspired him as a DJ and bringing in the talent that he would want to play alongside. In addition to bringing in the BlkMarket Membership parties for a new residency, both BlkMarket residents Taimur and Fahad will also be serving as District 36 resident DJs. The club’s much anticipated line-up, based on talent and ability rather than overhyped profiles, will provide a vital platform in NYC for the best in international DJ talent.

District 36 will also feature the next incarnation of Victor Calderone’s illustrious EVOLVE DJ residency. The legendary New York DJ handpicked the club to begin the next chapter of his legacy based on the club’s commitment to superior sound and its focus on building a technology-driven room for the next generation of clubbers. On the importance of his residency Calderone says, “As a DJ it’s important to establish a connection with your audience and after traveling the world, instituting a regular base in NYC is like coming home. This residency will be a fresh start and as an artist it’s important to evolve, reenergize the crowd as well as myself and always stay ahead of the curve. Together we will build a new home for clubbers.”

Beyond the club events, District 36 Special Events Director Lee Blumer, formerly of Hammerstein Ballroom, crobar and most recently M2, returns to nightlife with her talented team of consummate professionals. Her wealth of experience in film, Broadway, fashion and signature product launches will bring a sophisticated level of service to both large-scale events and intimate gatherings.

Enter District 36!

Round one for the new Lower East Side Thursday night dance party, Esthetik, went off without a glitch. The buzz is out. Now, event-organizers Nikola Nedeljkovic and Juliana Kim (the masterminds behind the ever-popular, never-ending ReSolute underground-parties) are gearing up for an even better second go at it: on August 12th, Esthetik lays siege on The Delancey (168 Delancey Street), with a special three hour extended set by Berlin-based DJ and producer Martin Landsky.

Landsky took an early fancy to acid house and techno sounds during the genres emergence in the late ‘80s. He jump-started his career at Front club in Hamburg, Germany, quickly making a name for himself. Since then, Landsky has upgraded to even bigger venues including Berlin’s temple, Watergate, and London’s Fabric. His most recognized singles consist of the 2007 track “Let Me Dance,” and the underground electronic beat, “Man High” from 2008. In 2009, he released an EP titled‚ We Are Streaking on the Poker Flat label. This year, Landsky unveiled the Werkshau unmixed compilation; a grouping of the producers favorite songs.

Esthetik resident, Steven LeTigre, will also be spinning tunes on 12 August. The fun at The Delancey starts at 11:30pm and goes until late.

Landsky’s Werkshau is available at the following URL:

British trance, progressive house and electronica/techno producer, James Holden has booked a coveted Thursday spot at Cielo Thursday, July 8th, 2010 to celebrate the release of his edition of DJ-KiCKS. DJ KiCKS is a compilation mix album from indie label !K7 Records. Holden has previously mixed Balance: 005 to much aplomb, so DJ-KiCKS great things are to be expected from his most recent collaboration.

True electronic dance music followers recognize Holden for tracks such as: “Come To Me” (with vocals by Julie Thompson), Britney Spears’ “Breathe on Me (Holden Vocal Mix),” Kirsty Hawkshaw singing “Fine Day (James Holden Remix),” Madonna’s “Get Together (James Holden Mix),” and Watergate’s anthem, “Heart of Asia (James Holden Remix).”

All in all, he may be testing the waters this side of the pond, but James Holden is bound for a warm reception. The Market Bosworth, Leicestershire, UK-native knows his stuff; he studied mathematics at Oxford University before driving off on a musically creative course and eventually forming his own label, Border Community. In 1999, at a tender 19 years old, Holden marched onto UK dance floors with his hit “Horizons.” Since, then, Holden’s unique blend of progressive electronic tunes, symphonic house, and psychedelic trance has earned him dance music fans around the world.

For DJ-KiCKS, Holden presents an eclectic and minimal mix, which includes his first single in four years “Triangle Folds.”

Celebrate Holden’s release of DJ-KiCKS at Cielo (18 Little West 12th Street
New York City), Thursday, July 8th, 2010. Doors at 10pm, 21+ with valid state issued photo ID.
They will play the Kinetic Field at the Electric Daisy Carnival this Friday, June 25th in Los Angeles plus Wet Republic in Las Vegas on June 26th as well as host their own tent at Creamfields for the second year running this August. They’re also confirmed to soundtrack the summer when they play a sixteen-week residency at Pacha. Moreover, there will be BBQ available during the whole day. Oh yes I think we have covered all the corners! Both days Lee Burridge will grace us with extended sets, and as to who will accompany him along the way, it’s up to you to find out first hand!

Lee Burridge is a man whose dj carrier spans over 25 years, and this career has taking him from organizing events in Honk Kong, to returning to London and starting Tyrant with Craig Richards and Sasha, and to the extensive world traveling and playing some of the best clubs and festival. After numerous album compilations and a constantly busy dj schedule, one thing is for sure, Lee has no plans in slowing down! You can check out more about Lee on his recently finalized site. For those who don’t know it took him a bit longer than 5 minutes to come back and get it done! www.leeburridge.com Alphahouse Records label boss, Butane’s philosophy and attitude toward music always stayed the same to his original view “My goal is to evolve as a person and an artist. I get bored with the same places, the same tastes, the same sounds. My music will always be an expression of my struggle to become a more complete person, we’re constantly adapting. My music evolves with me.” So prepare yourself to get musically intrigued.

Costa Rica’s best exports Kabuto & Koji have been causing kick a stir in the EDM for the last 3 years. Having released for some of the most praised labels out there, such as Cocoon, Get Physical, and many others, these guys are sure to continue on their road of international success. Making his way back to the city that never sleeps will be Mike Khoury from Listed Productions in San Francisco. New York’s loyal Sleepy & Boo, play electronic music of all shapes and sizes, rocking rooms big and small across New York City and beyond. They love thick drums, big baselines, and hypnotic grooves and tripped-out sci-fi synthesizers, and know how to put it all together. Forget sticking to just one genre — as DJs, they are known for their diversity and their knack for picking tracks from across the musical spectrum. Whether it’s twisted late night excursion or peak-hour mayhem, Sleepy & Boo never fail to turn a dance floor inside out. Last and most definitely not least we are presenting a special Back 2 Back set with our dear resident Connie and Feygin from New York’s Global Frequencies!

So bring all your flags and join us for this musical adventure!
