I recently discovered her on the album of Anoushka Shankar, with her powerful, moving flamenco-jazz vocals. If you are yet to hear her, you are truly missing out. Her latest compilation album, En Mi Pele includes a massive 26 tracks. To get a taste, take a look at the following:

The program includes selections by Brazilian giants Villa Lobos, Jobim, Pixinguinha, and Baden Powell as well as popular works by European masters Bach and Chopin, framed in unexpected ways.  The event will showcase the kaleidoscopic palette of European inspiration and Brazilian innovation, featuring singer/songwriter Ivan Lins, percussionist Cyro Baptista, and guitarist/composers Juarez Moreira and Chico Pinheiro.

All proceeds from the Bach to Brazil Gala will support Access Orpheus and the Orpheus Institute, the orchestra’s signature music education programs that provides free musical instruction and a look at democratic leadership at work to the next generation of musicians and university students.

If you missed her this time, she will be back in New York, June 4^th – but the show is sold out, so grab your tickets on stubhub before the price rockets. Her album, ‘Our Version of Events’ is out June 5th, and she is to join Coldplay on their US tour after.

Preceding Emeli was Yuna. While hard to compete with the tour de force that is Sandé, Yuna was the perfect opener. A very sweet voice, with some beautiful inflections throughout. Her song produced by Pharrell, ‘Live Your Life’, performed at the end of her set was a refreshing surprise – resulting in a nod to my friend in definite approval. Her live version was much more colorful than the recorded, which is always a great sign of a true live artist. Her self-titled album is out now.

Anoushka’s performance came from her latest work, ‘Traveller’, combining Indian classical music with flamenco guitar and vocals, culminating in a dynamic dialogue between the two forms of music.

I was blown away by the pulsating rhythms of the tabla drums matched to the impressive sitar of Shankar and deeply emotional vocals of Sandra Carrasco. The Bansuri was also particularly striking, ringing out across the audience in tones closely matching the human voice.

The talent of the individual performers was only second to the strength of the band together. Knowing each other so well, they were enjoying the show as much as the audience and this was reflected in their playful jamming; coming together wonderfully on woven crescendos, interspersed with impressive solos. Producer Javier Limón’s ability to enact Anoushka’s vision of the musical pairing shone as the flamenco guitarist alternated with Anoushka’s sitar, proving similarities, while celebrating difference.

The Mowgli’s are an exciting up-and-coming band from Southern California, set out to make the world a happier place one catchy riff at a time. Wanting to know more their musical motivation, recording process and what we can expect from the future, we asked the sunny septet our top 5 questions. Get to know them better below, while listening to the sounds of the recently released track entitled ‘San Francisco’ – LP out May 1st.

1. Collectivity is central to your band. In this respect, can you elaborate more about your song-writing process?

Every song is a completely different process. Sometimes it starts with a lyric and sometimes just a guitar riff. Sometimes it flows from the soul as a whole piece. Once we share it with each other it takes on its own spirit and at times even tells us which way to go.

2. I see you are just starting your tour, are you excited about SXSW?

We are EXTREMELY excited about SXSW. Being asked to be an official band at the festival is an immense honor and as passionate music fans we are stoked to be in the presence of so many new and inspiring artists. We hope to meet as many new friends and bands as possible so that we can better evolve as artists and continue making our contributions to the worlds of music on much larger scales.

We definitely see this festival as a launch pad and we can’t wait!

3. When can we expect your LP? Are there some central themes or stories that you wanted to tell in the material?

MAY 1st!

Our debut LP, ‘Sound The Drum’, tells the whittled story of our journey to discover the true meaning of love in this life. It paints a vivid portrait of our inner most being, telling the truths about ourselves and our relationships. Love is the constant, the only thing that keeps us going. The Mowgli’s share a common thread of passion for what it is be “good”. This reflects in the message of our music. It’s the idea that we are not alone in our longing to become the brilliant people we want to be. The time is now! So we must take it upon ourselves to ‘be the change we wish to see’. To ‘Sound The Drum’ is to let go of all anxiety and make peace with who we truly are. When we learn to love ourselves, we can learn to love each other and with that love we can heal the world..

4. Tell me about the Free The Mowgli’s campaign?

Well, when we set out to record our hippie ‘love’ record we felt it would only be best and most appropriate to hire a cuddly Australian marsupial critter of a producer whose physical and spiritual aural signature most accurately reflected the message of the record. Here’s the run down:

We were recording our record with Kevin for over a year. After months and months of dedicated work on said record, Kevin the record producing kangaroo decided to mowglinap us, and hold our record hostage until we could raise the ransom he felt we needed to properly launch the record. Kevin decided that his hard work would not go to waste, and that the record could not be released without the proper launch pad. Thus: we had to kickstart it and free the mowgli’s!

5. Finally, anything else we can expect in the future from you guys? Interesting collaborations, projects or shows?

We are planning a fun record release show for May 8th at The Roxy on Hollywood’s Sunset Strip where we’ll be playing ‘Sound The Drum’ in it’s entirety! From there we plan to do bursts of tours throughout the world and ride happily into the sunset.

We collab on the regular with our artist crew: The Collective CA. Among our friends we form over 20 musical projects many of which are represented by all the members of The Mowgli’s. Currently Josh & Colin (vocals and guitars for The Mowgli’s) are working on a debut ep for their new rock band Sharkitecture (set to release sometime in fall 2012). David (keys for The Mowgli’s) is also working on a wildly experimental electronica project where he plans to actually make the fun dance beats and sounds we hear from Djs live!
